Or… “What Do You Want To Be (When You Grow Up)?”

When I was a kid, I thought that I’d quite like to become a comic book artist, work at 2000AD and draw pictures of Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper or Slaine. As you can imagine, coming from an Asian background with typically South East Asian parents, their expectations were that I should do my best to try and get a job as a  Doctor, Lawyer, Teacher or maybe something in Accountancy.

Isn’t funny how other people’s expectations often differ greatly from the way that You see yourself (and really want to Be in Life)?

As a teenager, inspired by Rick Baker’s work on the film “An American Werewolf in London” (1981, Dir: John Landis), I was quite keen on the idea of being a special effects make up artist, or be in the movies in some way. During that time, I also wanted to become a Rock Star – just like every teenager with a guitar or bass guitar, in my case  (pun intended). In both cases, I found that the journey to both these destinations weren’t as easy as I’d hoped. Although being relatively good at drawing as a medium of expression, sculpture wasn’t really something I could get to grips with…

And as for being in a band? Let’s just say, I did one school concert and understood precisely how frightening performing in front of a crowd could be. Thankfully, having learned NLP, I discovered that, when you acquire sufficient confidence Presentations become very easy to do. (And yes, I can help you with that too!).

What’s interesting is that when I look back at life, what I thought I should become turned out very differently to the things I’ve found myself doing in Life!

For example, did you ever have a Careers Advice person try and help you work out what to do as a job, after you left school? I did… and it seemed a rather pointless exercise as, in my twenties, I found myself working as a Web Developer, building websites – a role that didn’t even exist when I was a teen!

These days, I find I’m passionate about my work as an NLP Life Coach – again, it wasn’t an option that was offered, way back in the past. It’s a role people that have informed me that I do exceptionally well. And, if I may be so bold, I’m inclined to agree with them.

Someone once asked me: “If money was no problem, and you could choose to do any job in the world – just because you loved doing it – what would you do?”. At the time I didn’t know. Now..? I’m sure.

So… Let me ask You:

What would YOU choose to do, if you really could?

What’s holding You back from achieving what you really want to do in Life?

Hold onto those questions in the back of your mind.

I’ll leave you with a reminder that, what’s now in the Past really is nothing compared to what you could accomplish in the future. The possibilities for positive change present themselves when you’re ready.

…And if you feel ready, why not choose to change, right now?
